This is a group of eight oriental species and some varieties or subspecies distributed from Greece eastward to eastern Anatolia, the Middle East and Iran. Some of the most beautiful Ophrys belong here.

This very beautiful species is typically an oriental one, extending from Macedonia to south-west Anatolia. When we visited Rhodes in 1997, the year was a very poor one for orchids, winter having been very cold and on the late. By far the most plentiful orchid was O. reinholdii, facing bravely the harshness of the weather. Slides 10 to 13 are interesting as they show high altitude plants, flowering in end of May and June. Slide 13 is the picture of a most remarkable lusus of a plant with two lips. Cette très belle espèce est typiquement orientale, répandue de la Macédoine au sud-ouest de l'Anatolie. Quand nous avons visité Rhodes en 1997, l'hiver avait été très froid et tardif et il n'y avait que peu d'orchidées. Nous n'avons, par exemple, vu aucun Serapias et aucun O. rhodia. Par contre l'orchidée la plus abondante, bravant courageusement les rigueurs du climat, était O. reinholdii. Les diapositives 10 à 13 sont intéressantes car elles montrent des plantes de haute altitude, fleurissant fin-mai, début-juin. La diapositive 13 illustre un remarquable lusus à deux labelles. | ||

This species was originally described from Iran. Slides 1-2 show the typical variety; slides 3-4 the variety leucotenia which is regarded as synonym of the typical variety by Pierre Delforge. With a question mark I added slides 5-6 which show a plant from Rhodes, Greece. It looks very much like an O. strausii although the petals are still auriculated. Anyway such a plant can explain why the species is sometimes mentionned from the island. The plant was also much slender than O. reinholdiiplants. Slide 7 comes from Renz' Flora Iranica and is here to allow to compare with a very oriental plant. Cette espèce est décrite d'Iran. Les diapositives 1-2 illustrent la variété typique, tandis que les diapositives 3-4 montrent la variété leucotenia considérée comme synonyme de la variété typique par Pierre Delforge. C'est avec quelques doutes que j'ajoute les dias 5-6 qui montrent une plante photographiée à Rhodes, en Grèce. Elle ressemble certes fort à O. straussii, mais ses pétales ne sont pas auriculés. Ce type de plante justifie sans doute les mentions de l'espèce dans l'île. La plante était aussi bien plus grêle que les O. reinholdii. This species is restricted in Turkey to the Hatay province, and probably exists in neighboring Syria. This dream-like little Ophrys is an oriental plant flowering on the late, in May. In Turkey it grows eastward of the city of Antalya to the southeast of Anatolia in the provinces of Diyarbakir and Hatay from where it reaches the northern Syrian coast. The species cannot be confused with any other one. Ce merveilleux petit Ophrys est une plante orientale qui pousse dans l'est de la Turquie à partir de la province d'Antalya jusqu'à celles de Diyarbakir et d'Hatay d'où elle atteint le nord de la côte syrienne. This most wonderful Ophrys exists in Crete, Rhodes and some other Aegean islands but appears to be absent from Karpathos. Slides 1-2 show the typical variety. Slides 3-4-5, 7-8 the horned one, from eastern Crete. Ce superbe Ophrys existe en Crète, à Rhodes et dans quelques autres îles égéennes, mais semble absent de Karpathos. syn. O. cretica subsp. beloniae G. & H. Kretzschmar 1996 The locus typicus of this subspecies is on the island of Naxos. Its very early flowering time and the general shape of its stigmatic cavity would perhaps linked it more to O. ariadnae, but I followed here the opinion of its descriptors who introduced it as a subspecies of O. cretica. All plants from Rhodes are refered to subsp. beloniae but some authorities, like Delforge, introduce it in the synonymy of O. cretica. It has large bulky flowers, the length of the spreaded lip being 15 mm. The taxon was upgraded to species level by P. Devillers and J. Devillers-Terschuren in 2009. Le locus typicus de cette sous-espèce est à Naxos. Sa floraison précoce et la forme de sa cavité stigmatique la feraient plutôt considérer comme sous-espèce d'O. ariadnae mais j'ai suivi ici l'opinion de ses descripteurs qui en font une sous-espèce d'O. cretica. Toutes les plantes de Rhodes appartiennent à la sous-espèce beloniae qui n'est toutefois pas reconnue par tous les auteurs, en particulier par Delforge qui l'introduit dans la synonymie d'O. cretica. Les grandes fleurs, très convexes, ont un labelle long de 15 mm. Le taxon a été élevé au niveau spécifique par P. Devillers et J. Devillers-Terschuren en 2009. This species, very close to O. cretica, flowers more early and is easily distinguishable from it by the form of its stigmatic cavity, less high and not constricted around its base. The O. ariadnae from the island of Kythira have a flowering time, second fortnight of April, which doesn't match at all that of Cretan O. ariadnae, which is an early species, flowering from the end of February to the end of March. In Crete the species is pollinated by Melicta albifrons subsp. albifrons an early flying solitary bee, which perhaps doesn't fly anymore at the end of April, but this is only speculative. For these reasons, and until further researches are undertaken, and further results produced, I have set the Kythirian plants apart from those from Crete. Les O. ariadnae de Cythère ont une période de floraison, seconde quinzaine d'avril, qui ne corespond pas du tout à celle des O. ariadnae de Crète et de Karpathos qui fleurissent surtout de la fin février à la fin mars. En Crète l'espèce est pollinisée par Melicta albifrons subsp. albifrons, une abeille solitaire qui vole tôt en saison, et dont j'ignore si elle vole toujours dans la deuxième moitié d'avril. Pour ces raisons, et en attendant de nouvelles recherches et de nouveaux résultats, j'ai isolé les plantes de Cythère de celles de Crète. | ||

This is an hybridogene species, the parents being O. lucis and O. straussii. The plant is known with certainty only from the graveyard of Yeniköy, a small Turkish village in the Taurus mountains, east of Antalya, where grows a good, highly endangered, colony. The plant is very variable, with specimens closer to one or to the other parent species. It is very strong growing, up to 55 cm tall, with 4 to 11 medium sized flowers, the lip of which has a length between 10.5 and 13.5 mm. It flowers quite on the late, from mid-May to mid-June at an altitude of 1500 m a.s.l. You'll find more informations about in OPHRYS NEWS 5 (n°40). C'est une espèce hybridogène dont les parents sont O. lucis et O. straussii. Elle n'est connue avec certitude pour le moment que du cimetière de Yeniköy, petit village turc du Taurus, à l'est d'Antalya, dans la province de Konya, à 1500 m d'altitude. Les plantes sont très variables, certaines se rapprochant plus de l'un, d'autres plus de l'autre parent. Elles sont robustes, atteignant 55 cm de haut, et portent de 4 à 11 fleurs de taille moyenne, la longueur du labelle variant en effet de 10,5 à 13,5 mm. Pr. Hannes F. Paulus has recently shown that the Ophrys named O. reinholdii in northeastern Greece had Eupavlovskia funeraria as pollinator, the true O. reinholdii being pollinated by Eupavlovskia obscura. He splitted the plants from northeastern Greece from O. reinholdii, giving them the name of O. reinhardiorum. There are morphological differences also, the lip of O. reinhardiorum having a mean length of 11.3 mm, that of O. reinholdii being 14.8 mm. Sepals of the "new" species are also more generally green than those of O. reinholdii which always show more pink and can even be altogether pink in the eastern Aegean islands. O. reinhardiorum also flowers later, from the end of April through June. O. reinhardiorum grow in northeastern Greece, northward and eastward of the Meteora monasteries to the Nestos delta in Thrace. Paulus vient de démontrer que les O. reinholdii du nord-est de la Grèce sont pollinisés par Eupavlovskia funeraria alors que les vrais O. reinholdii le sont par Eupavlovskia obscura. Les plantes du nord-est de la Grèce constituent donc une autre espèce qu'il nomme O. reinhardiorum. Il y a aussi des différences morphologiques, la valeur moyenne de la longueur du labelle d'O. reinhardiorum est de 11,3 mm contre 14,8 mm chez O. reinholdii. De plus, alors que les sépales d'O. reinholdii sont souvent très roses, voire tout à fait roses chez les plantes des îles de l'est de la mer Égée, ceux d'O. reinhardiorum sont en général verts. La phénologie n'est pas la même non plus. O. reinhardiorum fleurit depuis la fin d'avril jusqu'en juin, bien après O. reinholdii. O. reinhardiorum pousse dans le nord-est de la Grèce, à l'est et au nord des Météores jusqu'au delta du Nestos en Thrace.
