A group of only three species, of southwestern distribution. O. argensonensis is a very rare species, endemic to the French Poitou-Charentes region, where it was only recently discovered. O. provincialis is restricted to southern France and O. quadriloba to La Rioja in Spain. Unfortunately this last species is most probably extinct in France, where only two populations were ever discovered.

This lovely little Ophrys is a narrow endemic in four departements of the Poitou-Charentes region in western France. Its flowers are rather small, the length of the lip being 7 - 10 mm. The basal field is reddish, of a lighter shade that the center of the lip; the macula is edged with white and the petals are very broad. It flowers on the late, in June, even till mid-July. Ce ravissant petit Ophrys est un endémique étroit de quatre départements de la région Poitou-Charentes dans l'ouest de la France. Ses fleurs sont plutôt petites avec un labelle dont la longueur varie de 7 à 10 mm. Le champ basal est rougeâtre, d'une tonalité plus claire que le centre du labelle; la macule est liserée de blanc et les pétales sont très larges. La floraison est tardive, en juin, voire jusqu'à la mi-juillet. The Provence Ophrys is endemic to the Mediterranean coastal region of southern France, from the Hérault departement to the Alpes-Maritimes and extends probably into Liguria (Italy). The lip is 10-13.5 mm long, the basal field red and the macula is broadly edged with white. It flowers in April till early May. L'Ophrys de Provence est endémique de la région côtière méditerranéenne français, de l'Hérault aux Alpes-Maritimes. Il déborde sans doute en Ligurie voisine (Italie). Le labelle est long de 10 à 13,5 mm, le champ basal est rouge et la macule largement bordée de blanc. Il fleurit en avril, parfois jusqu'au début mai. This species, quite late flowering, perhaps of hybrid origin, is quite plentiful in Navarra and the Spanish provinces of Álava, Burgos, La Rioja, in the upper basin of river Ebra. Quite often is the name O. riojana hold for a synonym of O. quadriloba Rchb. fil. In 1851, in Icones Florae Germanicae et Helveticae..., H.G. Reichenbach fil. described, page 89, O. aranifera var. c quadriloba. He informs that he never saw the plant, but indeed, received a drawing from Barla, which he reproduces on plate 102 (CCCCLIV) fig. 2. You will see that drawing, clicking here Rchb1. The middle lobe of the lip is deeply divided into two small lobes, pointing forward, separated by a sharp little tooth which effectively gives the lip a quadrilobated appearance. In 1868, J.-B. Barla, in his Flore illustrée de Nice et des Alpes-Maritimes - Iconographie des Orchidées gives, page 65, a better description of O. aranifera var. quadriloba Reich., insisting again strongly on the fact that the mid-lobe of the lip is deeply bilobated. This variety grows around St. André, close to the Cave, flowering in April. He illustrates the flowers on plate 52, fig 9-10. You will see these two nice drawings clicking here: Barla. Still later, in 1929, E.G. Camus in her Iconographie des Orchidées d'Europe et du Bassin méditerranéen regards the plant as a chance hybrid O. aranifera x O. lutea, and reproduces, plate 73, fig 36-37, Barla's two drawings. For the time being, the plant seems to have desappeared altogether from France and, as the Spanish plants for sure don't fit well with the historical drawings of O. quadriloba, all of them, by the way, drawn by Barla, I think it's better to keep for them the much younger name of O. riojana. Cette espèce plutôt tardive, peut-être hybridogène, est assez abondante en Navarre et dans les provinces espagnoles d'Álava, de Burgos et de La Rioja, dans le haut bassin de l'Èbre. Le nom O. riojana est souvent considéré comme synonyme d'O. quadriloba Rchb. fil. En 1851, dans Icones Florae Germanicae et Helveticae..., H.G. Reichenbach fil. décrit à la page 89, O. aranifera var. c quadriloba. Il signale ne jamais avoir vu cette plante, mais avoir reçu un dessin de Barla, qu'il reproduit à la planche 102 (CCCCLIV) fig. 2, que vous verrez en cliquant ici: Rchb1. Le lobe médian du labelle est profondément divisé en deux lobules dirigés vers l'avant, séparés par une petite dent, ce qui donne effectivement au labelle un aspect quadrilobé, lequel justifie la description de cette variété. En 1868, J.-B. Barla, dans sa Flore illustrée de Nice et des Alpes-Maritimes - Iconographie des Orchidées donne à la page 65 une description un peu plus détaillée d'O. aranifera var. quadriloba Reich., dans laquelle il insiste sur le caractère bilobé du lobe central du labelle. La variété pousse à St. André, près de la Grotte, où elle fleurit en avril. La plante est illustrée pl 52, fig 9-10. Vous verrez ces deux illustrations en cliquant ici: Barla. Plus tard encore, en 1929, E.G. Camus dans son Iconographie des Orchidées d'Europe et du Bassin méditerranéen considère cette plante comme un hybride occasionnel O. aranifera x O. lutea et recopie, pl 73, fig 36-37, les deux figures de Barla. À l'heure actuelle la plante semble éteinte en France et, comme les plantes espagnoles ne correspondent certainement pas bien aux figures historiques qui, soit dit en passant, émanent toutes de Barla, je pense préférable de maintenir pour elles le nom, beaucoup plus récent d'O. riojana.
