This is a group of twelve western species, and some varieties, distributed from Spain to Italy and Croatia. Some of them are very localized, like O. sipontensis which is endemic to the south of mount Gargano in Italy and O. aveyronensis, endemic to the south of the French Massif Cental, mainly on the Causse du Larzac. On the other hand, O. incubacea spreads from Portugal to Albania.
All species of this group have their stigmatic cavities of the same dark colour as the central part of their lip, which tells them apart from those of the close B15 O. sphegodes group which always have the stigmatic cavity lighter than the central part of the lip.

This species is still very often called O. atrata which is a junior synonym. Slides 8 to 11 are made in Croatia, on the Dalmatian coast, close to Primosten, where O. incubacea is of common occurence. Cette espèce est encore souvent appelée O. atrata. Mais ce nom, donné illégitimement par Lindley, est un synonyme postérieur. This is nothing more that a color variety of O. incubacea with pink sepals and petals, but such a striking one, that it rightly deserves its name. Il s'agit tout au plus d'une simple variété de couleur à sépales et pétales rose pur d'O. incubacea, mais elle est tellement jolie qu'elle mérite bien son nom. This is the Ophrys from the south-eastern corner of France usually called O. majellensis, but quite different from this latter central Italian species as you can see, looking at the slides of true O. majellensis in group B15 (B15-3). The occurence of this species in the Alpes-Maritimes (France) is now well documented, but it probably also grows in neighbouring Liguria (Italy). Il s'agit de l'Ophrys des Alpes-Maritimes que l'on appelle généralement O. majellensis, mais qui est fort différent de cette espèce d'Italie centrale comme vous en jugerez en voyant les diapositives des vrais O. majellensis dans le groupe B15 (B15-3). Bien connue dans les Alpes-Maritimes (France), l'espèce existe aussi probablement en Ligurie (Italie)) où elle devrait être activement recherchée, augmentant ainsi peut-être d'une unité le nombre déjà impressionnant d'Ophrys recensés en Italie. Syn.: O. passionis Sennen ex J.Devillers-Terschuren & P.Devillers 1994 Please note that this is the new name of the species named for many years O. passionis in southern France and northeastern Spain. Veuillez noter qu'il s'agit du nouveau nom de l'espèce qui, pendant des années, s'est appelée O. passionis dans le sud de la France et le nord-est de l'Espagne. This species is distributed in Spain, in the South of France and extends to Brittany and perhaps to Italy. I't easily told apart from O. sphegodes by its stigmatic cavity having the same color as the central part of the lip. You'll find more informations about this species in OPHRYS NEWS 5 (n°41). Cette espèce existe dans le nord-est de l'Espagne et le Sud de la France. Elle s'avance jusqu'en Bretagne au nord et peut-être en Italie à l'est. On la distingue aisément d'O. sphegodes par sa cavité stigmatique de la même couleur que le centre du labelle. Slides 1-2 show Tuscan plants. Slides 3-4-5 plants from monte Gargano, with rather large flowers on a compact stalk. On the other side, slides 6-7-8, also made in the Gargano peninsula, show plants with smaller flowers, more distant on the stalk. These plants look more slender and flower perhaps 10 days before those illustrated on slides 3-4-5. The species has very recently been discovered in Croatia, to begin with on the islands of Korcula and Prezba (Lastovo islands), and for the first time, in 2007, by Roko Cicmir on the continent (see slide 9). Four species, O. archipelagi, lacaitae, neglecta and O. garganica grow on both sides of the Adriatic sea. Les dias 1-2 montrent des plantes toscanes. Les dias 3-4-5 sont faites au promontoire du Gargano, dans les Pouilles. Les plantes ont d'assez grandes fleurs portées sur une inflorescence compacte. Par contre, celles des dias 6-7-8, elles aussi photographiées au Gargano, sont plus grêles et fleurissent une dizaine de jours plus tôt. Elles ont des fleurs plus petites, plus espacées sur la tige. L'espèce vient d'être découverte en Croatie. Tout d'abord dans les îles de Korcula et Prezba (archipel de Lastovo) et tout récemment, en 2007, par Roko Cicmir, sur le continent. Quatre espèces, O. archipelagi, lacaitae, neglecta et O. garganica sont ainsi présentes des deux côtés de l'Adriatique. | ||

This is the plant with very small flowers, spread over some departments of southern France, and flowering much later than O. araneola. The labellum of O. virescens is much darker than the labellum of O. araneola which always looks somewhat washed out. Il s'agit de l'Ophrys à très petites fleurs, fleurissant beaucoup plus tard qu'O. araneola et dont le labelle est bien plus foncé que celui de cette dernière espèce. This is the sphegodes with very small flowers, flowering very early, already at the beginning of May in the North of France. Although snapped in early April, slides 3 and 4 perhaps represent O. virescens. In May 2004, in the French département of Aveyron, the season was on the late, and the species was very, very common. This is a good opportunity to illustrate its variation, which is done in slides 5 to 8. Il s'agit du sphegodes à très petites fleurs et à floraison précoce, déjà au début de mai, dans le Nord de la France. Malgré leur date, les dias 3 et 4 se rapportent peut-être à l'espèce précédente, O. virescens. L'espèce était très abondante en mai 2004 dans l'Aveyron à cause du retard de la saison. L'occasion est donc belle de présenter toute sa variabilité, ce qui est fait avec les diapositives 5 à 20. | ||

In Croatia, the blossomings of three species of "O. sphegodes" with small flowers follow each other. It begins with O. incantata (B13-13) in March and early April. The present species, O. tommasinii follows in April and early May, and O. illyrica is the last one, flowering from May to mid-June. O. tommasinii grows in Istria and the Quarnero archipelago. The lip of O. tommasinii frequently shows small round gibbosities usually absent in O. illyrica, the flowers of which don't quickly fade after anthesis. En Croatie, les floraisons de trois espèces d' "O. sphegodes" à petites fleurs se succèdent. La première est O. incantata (B13-13) qui fleurit en mars et au début d'avril. Vient ensuite la présente espèce, O. tommasinii, en avril et au début mai. Enfin O. illyrica ferme la marche puisqu'il fleurit tardivement, de mai à la mi-juin, en Istrie et dans l'archipel de Quarnero. Son labelle montre fréquemment de petites gibbosités arrondies, toujours absentes chez O. illyrica dont les fleurs n'ont pas tendance à se décolorer en gris vert. This is the third, and last, flowering species of small flowered sphegodes-like Croatian Ophrys. It is at home in Istria and the Quarnero archipelago, the locus typicus being on the island of Cres. The two other species refered to, are O. tommasinii (see just above, B16-7) and O. incantata B13-13. You will find more informations about O. illyrica in OPHRYS NEWS 2 (n°17). Des trois espèces à petites fleurs du groupe de sphegodes s.l. qui existent en Croatie, O. illyrica est la plus tardive. Two different species of "arachnitiform" Ophrys grow in the South of France. The early one, is usually named O. arachnitiformis (See species n°6 in the group B13). The late flowering one is named O. splendida. But some doubts persist about the identification of the taxon designed as O. arachnitiformis by Grenier and Philippe in 1859. It could indeed has been the late flowering plant! Deux Ophrys "arachnitiformes" poussent dans le Sud de la France. Le précoce est en général appelé O. arachnitiformis (il s'agit de l'espèce n°6 du groupe B13), tandis que la plante tardive est désignée par le nom récent d'O. splendida. Néanmoins certains doutes persistent quant à l'identification réelle du taxon appelé O. arachnitiformis par Grenier et Philippe en 1859. Ce pourrait être la plante tardive! This Ophrys, for sure one of the most magnificent of the flora of France, is a very variable one, as you will see, checking these slides. It grows to the south of the Grands Causses, having quite a restricted distribution. For the Spanish populations see below after slide 20. Cet Ophrys, assurément l'un des plus beaux de la flore française, est très variable, comme vous le verrez en parcourant les diapositives qui suivent. Sa distribution est restreinte; elle se limite en effet au rebord sud des Grands Causses, surtout le Causse du Larzac, où il fleurit en mai et au début de juin. Spanish populations - Populations espagnoles synonyme : Ophrys vitorica Kreutz 2007 The Spanish populations of O. aveyronensis have been the subject of much debates. Sometimes they were considered to be just hybrid swarms, but between what and what, they also received full species status as O. vitorica Kreutz, or simply considered as O. aveyronensis s. str. As this is the opinion of most specialists who have seen these plants, I shall adopt it here. Le statut des populations espagnoles d'O. aveyronensis a été, et est toujours l'objet de nombreux débats. Tour à tour considérées comme des essaims hybrides, ou une espèce à part entière, O. vitorica Kreutz, ou simplement des O. aveyronensis s. str. Comme c'est cette dernière solution qui a la faveur du plus grand nombre des spécialistes qui ont vu les plantes, je vais l'adopter ici. This Spanish late flowering species is widespread from Navarre in the North to Andalusia in the South. It favors fresh to wet habitats, marshy meadows, flooded ditches, which is quite unusual for an Ophrys. The twelve slides here presented give an first-rate overview of this very variable species. Cette espèce espagnole tardive est répandue de la Navarre au nord à l'Andalousie au sud. Elle habite des localités fraiches à très humides, prairies inondées, fossés détrempés, ce qui est inhabituel pour un Ophrys. This species was discovered and, for the time being (2008), seems to be endemic to Basilicata in the southwest of Potenza. It grows quite high in altitude, in mountain meadows between 580 and 1100 m a.s.l. where it flowers about mid-May. It is near the more widespread O. incubacea, hence it name. The plant is 12-20 cm tall with 2 to 8 mid-sized flowers. On the fresh the lip length is 7-10 mm, 9-11 mm when spread; most of the time it has no gibbosities, or quite weak ones, its colour is quite variable, much more so than that of the lip of O. incubacea. You'll find more about O. pseudoatrata on the OPHRYS NEWS 6 (n°45) sheet. Cette espèce fut découverte et semble, au moins jusqu'à présent (2008), endémique de la Basilicate, au sud-est de Potenza. Elle pousse dans des pelouses montagnardes entre 580 et 1100 m d'altitude où elle fleurit aux environs de la mi-mai. Elle est voisine d'O. incubacea, bien plus répandu, d'où son nom. La plante mesure de 12 à 20 cm de haut et porte de 2 à 8 fleurs de taille moyenne. Sur le frais le labelle mesure de 7-10 mm, 9-11 mm quand il est étalé; la plupart du temps il est dépourvu de gibbosités, ou celles-ci sont peu accusées, sa couleur est variable, bien plus que celle du labelle d'O. incubacea.
