This group is made up of three species. One of them, O. insectifera is spread over a vast territory and is the Orphys species that proceeds the most to the north, reaching south Scandinavia. The two other ones are narrow endemics, O. aymoninii in the French Massif Central and O. subinsectifera in the north of Spain.

This most remarquable plant is a very narrow endemic of the south rim of the Grands Causses, in the South of the Massif Central, France, where it flowers in May and early June. This common Ophrys is interesting as it is the species extending the more to the North, reaching Norway, Sweden and Finland. It is by no way common in the South of Europe, and slides 13 - 14 are very interesting as they show plants from northern Greece, a country where the species is of utmost rarity, limited to only very few sites. Cet Ophrys commun est intéressant car c'est l'espèce qui s'avance le plus vers le Nord, atteignant la Norvège, la Suède et la Finlande. L'espèce est par contre rare dans le Sud de l'Europe, et les dias 13 - 14 sont particulièrement intéressantes car elles montrent des fleurs photographiées dans le Nord de la Grèce, pays où elle est rarissime et limitée à quelques stations, voire peut-être une seule. | ||

Until recently this species was still an object of debate between specialists, but it appears to be well individualized by its pollinator Sterictiphora furcata.
