B4. O. apifera group


This is a group of only one species, O.apifera, having perhaps the broadest distribution of any Ophrys species. It is usually self-pollinating, showing often very striking variations.

B4-1. O. apifera Hudson 1762

This species has a very large distribution, from Portugal to Turkey, the Middle East and the Caucasus.
Jean Claessens (Geulle, The Netherlands) and Jacques Kleynen (Bunde, The Netherlands) have clearly shown that the many described varieties of O. apifera are definitely without any kind of taxonomic value, the same plant displaying sometimes flowers from different varieties year by year.
Also look at slide 11 below, showing a plant with regular and abnormal flowers on the same scape.
Cette espèce a une très grande aire de répartition, de la péninsule ibérique à la Turquie, au Moyen-Orient et au Caucase.
Jean Claessens (Geulle, Pays-Bas) et Jacques Kleynen (Bunde, Pays-Bas) ont montré que les nombreuses variétés d'O. apifera sont sans valeur taxonomique, une même plante pouvant avoir des fleurs appartenant à des variétés différentes d'une année à l'autre.
Voyez en effet la dia 11 ci-dessous qui montre des fleurs normales et anormales sur la même tige.

This rather common variety has green, rather long and narrow revolute petals, reaching almost half the length of the sepals.
Cette variété a des pétales verts, longs et étroits, atteignant environ la moitié de la longueur des sépales. Elle est assez fréquente, tout comme des formes intermédiaires.

The colour of the lip explains the name of this rather rare variety. In Belgium only two plants are known, persisting since many years. This is strange for O. apifera which has often a short lifetime.
Il n'est sans doute pas nécéssaire d'expliquer d'où provient le nom de cette variété assez rare. On n'en connaît que deux plantes en Belgique, persistant depuis de nombreuses années, ce qui est étonnant pour des O. apifera qui ont en général plutôt la vie courte!

Unnamed var. from Pindos mountains

Till now the many varieties of O. apifera from western Europe have not been found in northwestern Greece where Zissis Antonopoulos (Thessalonique, Greece) spotted around ten plants of this most remarquable variety which could well deserve a name as so many other ones.
Les nombreuses variétés d'O. apifera d'Europe occidentale n'ont pas encore été trouvées en Grèce du Nord où Zissis Antonopoulos (Thessalonique, Grèce) a découvert une dizaine de plantes de cette remarquable variété qui mériterait bien un nom, comme tant d'autres.

This variety has a highly degenerate lip, very long, narrow and pointed. The macula is also degenerate, being uneven, diffuse, badly shaped.
Photographies were published showing regular and trollii type flowers on the same scape.
Cette variété se caractérise par un labelle étroit, allongé, pointu et une macule diffuse, mal formée, dégénérée elle aussi.
On a publié des photos montrant des fleurs normales et d'autres du type trollii sur la même hampe florale.

This varierty has petals to 7 mm long with colour and consistency similar to those of the sepals. Its lip is of usual form or somewhat more globular.
Slides 1 to 8 show plants of a most remarquable population recently discovered in the département des Ardennes, France.
The lips of these plants remains concave, not opening well.
Les pétales de cette variété peuvent atteindre 7 mm de long; leur couleur et leur consistance sont analogues à celles des sépales. Le labelle est de forme normale ou plus globuleux.
Les diapositives 1 à 8 ont été faites dans une remarquable population récemment découverte dans le département des Ardennes, en France.
Le labelle de ces plantes se déploie mal, restant très concave et mal formé.

This variety has long and broad petals with the same texture as sepals.
The lip is of normal shape, without any deformity unlike that of variety botteronii.
Les pétales de cette variété sont longs et larges, de la même texture que les sépales.
Le labelle par contre ne présente aucune déformation, au contraire de celui de la variété botteronii.

This exceptionally lovely and colourful variety of O. apifera was only shortly discovered.
It appears to be endemic to the southern foothills of the Alps in Italy, where it is mainly at home in the valleys of Tagliamento and Piave rivers, in the eastern province of Udine. But colonies are known as far west as Garda lake.
Cette ravissante variété d'O. apifera, très colorée, n'a été que récemment découverte.
Elle semble endémique des contreforts des Alpes italiennes où elle pousse surtout, en petites colonies peu fournies en individus, dans les vallées des fleuves Tagliamento et Piave, dans la province d'Udine. Mais elle existe aussi plus à l'ouest, près du lac de Garde.

This variety was first described from Hampshire in 1998.
It is now widely known in southern England from Essex to Somerset, north to Northamptonshire and was named for the Roman name, Venta Belgarum, of Winchester.
I don't know if it was ever spotted outside England.
C'est en 1998 que cette variété a été décrite pour la première fois, du Hampshire en Angleterre.
Depuis on l'a largement trouvée dans le Sud de l'Angleterre, de l'Essex au Somerset, au nord jusqu'au Northamptonshire.
Son nom fait référence au nom latin, Venta Belgarum, de Winchester.
J'ignore si elle existe en dehors de l'Angleterre.

This strange variety with a concave lip was described from plants growing in the French département of Aveyron. It has now been discovered also in Croatia.
Cette étrange variété au labelle concave est décrite originellement du département français de l'Aveyron. Elle vient d'être découverte en Croatie (2009).
