This is a large group of, at least for the moment (2005), twenty species, one subspecies and one variety. It spreads from Italy, Sardinia and Sicily to the Middle East, with its main concentration in eastern Mediterranean countries. Some are very narrow endemics. Such are O. chestermanii in Sardinia, O. biancae in Sicily, O.aeoli, O. thesei and O.andria in the Aegean islands.

This magnificent Ophrys was for long believed to grow only in the Iglesiente, but two growing sites have been spotted in the center of Sardinia, island where it is endemic to. It avoids typical Ophrys growing places in full sun but prefers to grow in the shadow of trees where flies its pollinator, the bumblebee Psithyrus vestalis, also the pollinator of O. normanii which favours the same kind of habitats, but the insect doesn't show any interest for the O. tenthredinifera s.l. (probably O. neglecta) also present on the same biotopes but with a more sunny aspect. On a longtemps pensé que ce magnifique Ophrys était limité à l'Iglesiente, mais deux stations ont été découvertes dans le centre de la Sardaigne, île où l'espèce est endémique. Elle évite les endroits très ensoleillés, où poussent en général les Ophrys, mais préfère l'ombre des arbres où vole son pollinisateur, le bourdon Psithyrus vestalis qui pollinise aussi O. normanii, fréquent dans les mêmes endroits, mais ne manifeste aucun intérêt pour l'O. tenthredinifera s.l. local (sans doute O. neglecta) qui pousse sur les mêmes sites mais plus au soleil. As far as known for the time being, this species is endemic to the Greek islands of Amorgos and Astypalea, in the eastern Cyclads. The plant flowers quite on the late, in April - May. It has large flowers, spread out lip length 10-15 mm, a usually entire, quadrangular lip with glabrous on their inner side gibbosities. Photos beneath show very well the great variability of the flower which can be fucifloroid or scolopaxoid, with sometimes green sepals or dark petals, and so on... Dans l'état actuel de nos connaissances, cette espèce n'existe que dans les îles grecques d'Amorgos et d'Astypaléa dans les Cyclades orientales. La plante fleurit relativement tard, en avril - mai. Ses fleurs sont grandes (longueur du labelle étalé 10-15 mm). Le labelle est généralement entier, quadrangulaire, avec des gibbosité:s glabres sur leur face intérieure. Les photos qui suivent montrent bien la grande variabilité de la fleur qui peut être fucifloroïde ou scolopaxoïde, avoir parfois des sépales verts; ou des pétales foncés, etc... This rare species is a Cycladic endemic, being only known, for the time being (2005), from the islands of Naxos, Tinos and Kimolos. Flowers are medium-sized, the lip length is 9 - 14 mm; it is quite strongly convex with its edges folded downwards. Sepals are pink to purple and petals are quite long, 3.5 - 6.5 mm. Plant flower from March to May, although when we visited Naxos on April 21 and 22, 2008 they were at the end of their flowering time. Cette espèce rare est un endémique cycladique, seulement connu, à ce jour (2005), des îles de Naxos, Tinos et Kimolos. Les fleurs sont de taille moyenne, la longueur du labelle variant de 9 à 14 mm; il est fortement convexe avec les bords rabattus vers le bas. Les sépales sont roses à pourpres et les pétales assez longs, 3,5 - 6,5 mm. Les plantes fleurissent de mars à mai, mais quand nous avons visité Naxos les 21 et 22 avril 2008, elles étaient en fin de floraison. This wonderful Ophrys appears to be endemic to the north of the Gargano promontory, mainly around the monte Delio where many nice populations are present. In fact it also exists much more to the south, around Martina Franca. Slides 9-10 show a plant with pink sepals and petals. Ce très bel Ophrys semble endémique du nord du promontoire du Gargano, principalement près du mont Delio où il existe de belles populations. En fait son aire de répartition est plus vaste car on le rencontre aussi plus au sud, près de Martina Franca. Les dias 9-10 montrent une plante dont les sépales et les pétales sont roses. Dr. Hannes.F.Paulus has shown that two different species were mixed together under the name of O. episcopalis. An early species, O. maxima and a late one, O. episcopalis. They are tell apart by different pollinators and successive flowering times. For more informations, see OPHRYS NEWS n°6. After more in-depth investigations about pollinating insects on Rhodos and in Crete (Paulus & Hirth, 2009), it has been shown that the pollinator of O. episcopalis in Crete is Eucera cressa, an insect endemic to Crete. On the other hand, always in Crete, it was also established that Eucera berlandi, the supposed pollinator of O. maxima was in fact pollinating hybrids O. episcopalis x O. heldreichii and that O. maxima is a species that doesn't exist. As its pollinator is endemic to Crete, O. episcopalis is also endemic to that island and the "O. episcopalis" from other islands and from Turkey belong to other taxa. Le Dr. Hannes F.Paulus a montré que deux espèces différentes étaient confondues sous le nom d' O. episcopalis. Une espèce à floraison précoce, O. maxima et une espèce tardive, O. episcopalis. Des études plus approfondies des pollinisateurs en Crète et à Rhodes (Paulus & Hirth, 2009) ont montré qu'en Crète le pollinisateur d'O. episcopalis est l'abeille endémique Eucera cressa. Par ailleurs, toujours en Crète, Eucera berlandi le pollinisateur supposé d'O. maxima, pollinise en fait des hybrides O. episcopalis x O. heldreichii. Il s'en suit qu'O. maxima n'existe pas et qu'O. episcopalis est un endémique crétois tout comme son pollinisateur. Les "O. episcopalis" provenant d'autres îles ou de Turquie appartiennent dès lors à d'autres taxa. This is the last Ophrys to flower on the Island of Samos, from the very end of April to almost the end of May. The flowers are always fucifloroid and very large, the lip being 16.5 - 19.5 mm long. Petals are short and the pilosity is sometimes sligthly reduced in the latero-distal quarters of the lip. Following Karel Kreutz the late O. episcopalis growing in western Anatolia belong to this taxon. C'est le dernier Ophrys qui fleurisse à Samos, de la fin avril à la fin mai. Les fleurs, toujours fucifloroïdes sont grandes, la longueur du labelle variant de 16,5 à 19,5 mm. Par contre les pétales sont courts et la pilosité est parfois légèrement atténuée dans les quarts latéro-distaux du labelle. This is the small flowered Ophrys of the Ophrys bornmuelleri group endemic to Corsica and Sardinia. The plant is rather slender with 3 to 8 (12) rather small flowers with a length of the lip between 7 and 12 mm. Flowering is quite late, from mid-April into May. In Corsica the species is very rare, limited to the calcareous region around Bonifacio. It is much more common in Sardinia. Il s'agit de l'Ophrys à petites fleurs du groupe d'O. bornmuelleri, endémique de Corse et de Sardaigne. C'est une plante assez grêle portant de 3 à 8, voire 12, fleurs assez petites, dont le labelle a une longueur comprise entre 7 et 12 mm. Elle fleurit assez tard, de la mi-avril au début de mai. En Corse l'espèce est très rare, limitée à la table calcaire de Bonifacio. Elle est bien plus commune en Sardaigne. This lovely little Ophrys is one of the many Sicilian endemics. It's quite widespread over the island, often growing with the much larger O. oxyrrhynchos. It often shows very striking varieties with a very broad yellow edge around the lip. Such a plant, seen years ago in 1986 (slide 2) made me believe to have found O. lacaitae which of course it was not, and this was a big deception, as still 17 more years were needed to be one day, for the first time, in front of the much sought after O. lacaitae. But sorry for speaking of myself! Ce joli petit Ophrys est un des nombreux endémiques siciliens. Il est répandu sur toute l'île, poussant souvent en compagnie du plus robuste O. oxyrrhynchos. On trouve fréquemment de belles variétés qui ont un large bord jaune autour du labelle, voire un labelle presque tout jaune. Une telle plante, vue il y a longtemps, en 1986 (dia 2), m'avait fait croire avoir trouvé O. lacaitae, ce qu'elle n'était évidemment pas. Déception d'autant plus vive qu'il a fallu attendre 17 années supplémentaires pour trouver un jour O. lacaitae, l'Ophrys tant espéré. Mais pardon de parler de moi! | ||

O. candica has quite a strange area of distribution. Described from Crete, it also exists on Rhodes and perhaps some others nearby islands. The species is also present in Apulia, southern Italy, from where it is frequently documented, but should I trust the slides and photographies existing, it is strongly influenced by O. apulica over there. In its oriental range, O. candica has now been splitted in a number of independant species. You'll get a better view of this by clicking OPHRYS NEWS 4 (n°32). Italian O. candica which only grow in coastal biotopes in the far south of Apulia, close to Lecce, have probably been introgressed by O. apulica, which explains the often elongated form of their lips. Urbanisation of its former coastal haunts have dramatically reduced its populations and it is now under severe threat (Ernst Gü:gel pers. comm.) This subspecies inhabits the Greek island of Kythira and also, as said by the two authors, Lakonia in southern Peloponnese, where it is of sparce occurence. These splendid little Ophrys are told apart from the typical Cretan subspecies by a smaller, strongly convex lip, 9-11 mm long, longer sepals (10-13 mm) and petals one quarter shorter than the sepals. It also flowers more early, the holotype having been gathered on April 1, 1999. Cette sous-espèce provient de l'île grecque de Cythère, mais se rencontre aussi d'après les auteurs, quoique rarement, en Laconie dans le sud du Péloponnèse. Elle se distingue de la sous-espèce crétoise typique par un labelle plus court, fortement convexe, long de 9-11 mm, des sépales plus longs (10-13 mm) et des pétales plus courts d'un quart que les sépales. It is now widely admitted that this is just a variety with long "horns" on the lip of O. candica. In Crete and on Rhodes both varieties grow mixed together with lots of in-between plants. This was very nicely illustrated by Kretzschmar and Eccarius in their book about orchids of Rhodes. This species, growing in Lakonia, Peloponnese, was long considered as O. minoa. But the O. bornmuelleri group has now been intensively studied, and many new species introduced. O. lacaena is endemic to Peloponnese, and the last of the "new" species, you'll find more informations about in OPHRYS NEWS 4 (n°32). It's a spindly, slender plant, eventually 50 cm tall, giving 4 to 12 flowers having 10-16 mm long lips and very small, hairy petals. This oriental species was originally described from the province of Mugla, in Turkey. Later it was also found growing in some of the Dodecanese islands (Greece), Rhodes, Samos and Chios. In Rhodes it appears to be limited to the Profitis Ilias range, where it's quite common. Slides 1-11 were made over there in 2004 and 1997. Would the plants shown on slides 10-11 well pertain to this species, it would certainly well deserve its name, heterochila meaning "with various lips". Slides 12-17, kindly given by Hans Dekker (Hoogeveen, The Netherlands), are made in Turkey, and allow a better comparison of Greek and Turkish plants. Cette espèce orientale fut au départ décrite de la province de Mugla, en Turquie. Plus tard on la découvrit dans certaines îles du Dodécanèse (Grèce) comme Rhodes, Samos et Chios. Elle n'est pas rare dans le massif du Profitis Ilias à Rhodes, d'où proviennent les dias 1-11, faites en 2004 et 1997. Si les plantes des dias 10 et 11 appartiennent bien à cette espèce, celle-ci mérite bien son nom, heterochila signifie en effet "aux labelles variés". Les dias 12-17, aimablement données par Hans Dekker (Hoogeveen, Pays-Bas), sont faites en Turquie, et permettent de mieux comparer les plantes grecques et turques. The authors of the description have found that in Anatolia, the pollinator of the plant called O. minoa, is Eucera graeca (Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Anthophoridae). This pollinator cuts the Turkish plants off from those of Crete and Greece, and they deserve a new name, O. lyciensis. As the pollinators of the closely allied species, O. minoa and O. candica are still unknown, I think it to be better, for the time being, to adopt a conservative attitude, regarding O. candica, O. minoa and O. lyciensis as good species. Hannes F. Paulus & M. Hirth have shown that in Crete the pollinator of O. episcopalis is Eucera cressa, a bee endemic to that island which induces the endemicity of the Ophrys. On the other hand, in the forests around Laerma, central Rhodes, there is another episcopalis - type Ophrys which is pollinated by Eucera plumigera. The same bee also pollinates the same Ophrys around Lithi on Chios. O. saliarisii has large flowers. The lip length is 13.8 - 16.1 mm and its shape is very trapezoid. The basal field is short and petals are twice as long as broad. The species flowers early, in the first fortnight of April, much earlier than O. colossaea. You'll find an abstract of the paper containing the description in OPHRYS NEWS 6 (n°51). Hannes F. Paulus & M. Hirth ont montré qu'en Crète le pollinisateur d'O. episcopalis est Eucera cressa. Cette abeille, tout comme O. episcopalis, est endémique de l'île. D'autre part dans les forêts du centre de Rhodes, près de Laerma, il y a un autre Ophrys du type d'O. episcopalis pollinisé par Eucera plumigera. Cette abeille pollinise le même Ophrys aux alentours de Lithi, à Chios. O. saliarisii a de grandes fleurs. Son labelle trapezoïdal est long de 13,8 à 16,1 mm. Le champ basal est court et les pétales sont deux fois plus longs que larges. L'espèce fleurit tôt, dans la première quinzaine d'avril, bien avant O. colossaea.
